Kinesio Tape Therapy

Have you seen black, pink, blue or beige stuff on your favorite athlete? What is it? The answer is Kinesio Tape®, a specialized tape developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase more than 30 years ago in Japan that is becoming more and more prevalent in athletics. Kinesio Tape® is used to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while allowing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. It is used to successfully treat a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and medical conditions.

How it Works

Kinesio Tape® is applied to the skin in a specific pattern using precise force and direction depending on the needs of the patient. Kinesio Tape® is latex free and is composed of cotton fiber and medical grade adhesive glue. There is no medication in the tape. It is waterproof and can used in the pool or in the shower and will last 2 to 5 days.

 The patient seen in the 4 images below crashed his dirt motorcycle and the handle bars went into his side. When he came in, the bruising was about 12 inches across and 4-6 inches tall. The bruising was also painful to touch. Kinesio Tape® was applied in fingerlike strips. After 1 application of Kinesio Tape®, his skin had returned to normal where the tape was applied and the pain was completely gone! Depending on the patient, a full recovery from a significant bruise like this would take between 4 and 6 weeks. He was 90 percent recovered in less than 2 weeks
